Convergence: A League of Legends Story – A New Adventure with Ekko
After Viego, Ziggs, and Sylas had their own developer-driven adventures through Riot Forge, it’s finally Ekko’s turn with Convergence: A League of Legends Story. Ekko, the time-manipulating champion in League of Legends, can now teleport a few seconds into the past to rectify fatal mistakes during matches, escape tricky situations, and save lives. In Convergence, Ekko showcases a similar ability. Although he jumps a bit less compared to other assassins like LeBlanc or Zed in the Riot Games’ MOBA, this prodigious boy from Zaun, who appears quite charming, is dedicated to an action-platformer game. It’s a blend of League of Legends and Metroidvania, offering plenty of jumps, dodges, and battles on PC, PS5, Xbox Series, and Switch. Is it déjà vu? No, it’s Ekko!
A Glimpse into Ekko’s Time-Bending Abilities
Right from the start, we are introduced to Ekko’s signature ability, the timeskip equivalent. Pressing a button on the controller will rewind the game time, resetting both us, enemies, and our position on the map for a maximum of five seconds. This allows us to avoid losing life or even dying. The time limit sets a boundary, preventing us from being completely overwhelmed. Moreover, it offers another advantage as we now know what to expect, enabling us to act more intelligently than before. Similar to League of Legends, Ekko’s shadow always trails behind him with a time delay. It functions almost the same way as in League of Legends, except it’s not on Summoner’s Rift but in a different game environment.
For those who have played Ekko before, Convergence’s gameplay closely resembles the champion. His time-based abilities, his dash reminiscent of a phase jump, and other unlocked jumps and skills throughout the game provide entertainment and allow us to rediscover Ekko with his familiar abilities. Ekko feels authentic yet complex. Enemies can engage in melee combat with him, but there are also projectiles that you must dodge, capable of hitting you from the front or above. Sometimes, you find yourself in trouble, especially during chaotic team fights, and you need to react swiftly. Rewinding time will definitely aid you here.
A Fusion of Tradition and Spirit
Although not every game in this genre is to my liking, Riot Forge truly excels here. As a former League of Legends player, I am still a big fan of how much tradition and spirit they bring from the original game and incorporate into their smaller yet remarkable projects. However, I still await a game centered around a champion who holds a special place in my heart. Perhaps a delightful adventure featuring Lulu or the dark tale of Morgana will be reimagined in the future? First, Nunu receives his icy story, and then there are many major League of Legends video game projects that I have eagerly anticipated since their initial announcement – especially the MMORPG or Project L.
