League of Legends: Possible changes in player regulations
Different formats are always present in League of Legends competitions. Just think about the last MSI, which introduced a lower bracket in an international tournament, something that hadn’t been seen in a long time! Rules regarding players can also evolve, although it is generally less common.
On the sidelines of a competition, there was a discussion with the head of LEC to get a reaction to two big rumors regarding a possible change in regulation. The increase in the limit of imported players and the sidelining of minor players. Just as a reminder, players like Rekkles 🇸🇪, Caps 🇩🇰 or Perkz 🇭🇷 started in LEC before they were 18 years old. The Croatian even became a two-time European champion before reaching the age of majority…Although it remains to be seen if there have been more recent examples.
Imports are staying the same
Today, whether in LEC, LPL or LCS, teams can have a maximum of 2 imported players in their team. If more foreign talents are signed, only 2 of them can be starters on the match sheet at the same time! There are solutions to play with the residency rule, but it requires quite a bit of time. In the United States, for example, you have to get your Green Card, which is not really that easy…But recently, a rumor about the North American league has been circulating on social media. The LCS is reportedly considering raising the imports limit to 3. In the short term, it may be a good idea to be competitive. But in the long term, it is mainly an admission of weakness and a snub to its local talents.
Minimum age for playing in LEC might change
On the other hand, changing the minimum age to play in LEC is being studied. Caps started in LCS EU before he was 18 years old! Also, earlier this year, LEC was warned about an error in increasing the minimum age to play in LEC. However, it was a false alarm and today, the limit remains set at 17 years old. The league, however, specified that the project is being studied…with potential modifications in the future.
Potential reasons for the changes
Some assume that this initiative aims to find new sponsors who cannot work with minors (alcoholic beverages, online gambling…). When asked about this hypothesis, the person in charge did not have a very precise answer. It is fair to say that Riot Games thinks before signing partnerships. Whether there are minors or not, there is always a prior verification to have sponsors in line with the values defended by the company.
